![]() It’s this iteration-which Jeff Buckley covered in 1994 and Rufus Wainwright sings on the soundtrack for the animated film “Shrek”-that most people recognize. Cale’s version is sparse and undulating, and he sounds freshly gutted after every verse. Cohen’s take is cool and moody, sung in a staid, stately baritone. In 1991, though, the song was still an obscure track from “Various Positions,” a record that nobody was paying much attention to. In the early nineties, Cale closed most of his sets with a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” which Cale first recorded in 1991, for a tribute album titled “I’m Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen,” and later included on “Fragments of a Rainy Season.” “Hallelujah,” which was released by Cohen in 1984, has been covered so relentlessly that it now feels like a shortcut for conjuring feelings of despondency. It is not hard to sense that same spirit in Cale. His poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” published in 1951, ends, “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” But he wrote often of the possibility of putting off death, or, at least, of defying it. Thomas imbibed and philandered without restraint, dying, in 1953, of pneumonia exacerbated by the several days he’d spent drinking whiskey at the White Horse Tavern, in the West Village. “Death strikes their house,” he intones, his voice cavernous and melancholy. “Fragments of a Rainy Season” opens with a song called “A Wedding Anniversary.” Cale sings lyrics by Dylan Thomas-another aching Welshman-over a tense piano melody. The result can be challenging and discordant, but this is still a deeply benevolent impulse-to recognize and free pain. But he doesn’t revel in suffering, either he figures out what hurting sounds like and then articulates it. The album art features an exchange from “Macbeth”:Ĭale is not interested in circumventing or prettifying anguish: let it come down. He was usually accompanied only by his own piano playing, and the set list included compositions from different eras in his discography, along with covers of lonesome songs like “Heartbreak Hotel.” For the reissue, Cale added eight new tracks: some alternative versions-including a second, more jarring “Heartbreak Hotel,” with distorted strings and other inconsonant noises-and some songs that didn’t make the original cut. Last month, Cale reissued “Fragments of a Rainy Season,” a live album recorded at various stops on a 1991 world tour. ![]() It can feel, at times, as if Cale is tidying his legacy-dusting the house before company comes by. Baseline observations occurred for five weekdays, during morning rounds (2–4 hours), on acute care medicine units. 10 Observers were instructed to document “unknown” if they were unable to observe or unsure that they witnessed mindful behavior. 18 Additional training was provided regarding the observation of mindfulness behaviors, which were identified in two ways: first, if a person paused from walking, talking, or engaging with their environment and appeared to focus on the process of rubbing soap/gel into hands and, second, when a person was noted to take multiple, slow, deliberate breaths while performing hand hygiene. 17 Five observers with previous experience observing hand hygiene adherence (3 research specialists, two students) received training regarding the established recommendations for hand hygiene auditing (i.e., type of hand hygiene performed, upon entry and exit of patient room, and when to document “unknown”) ( Online Supplement 1). We hypothesized that participants exposed to mindfulness would exhibit increased hand hygiene and mindfulness behaviors compared to those randomized to the control group.īaseline rates of hand hygiene before and after patient room entry for each member of the team on the medicine wards were collected using a standardized, secret shopper auditing approach. We selected physicians in particular for hand hygiene compliance among physicians lags behind that of most other professional groups. We sought to assess if mindful hand hygiene would promote hand hygiene adherence and mindful attention among physicians and medical students in a hospital setting. 7, 9 Adoption of mindful practice, in turn, may have other benefits including enhanced attention, 13 situational awareness, 14 provider well-being, 10 and reduction of diagnostic medical errors by addressing cognitive biases. This group effect could lead to collective mindfulness, 12 where the behavior of peers affects others to improve hand hygiene rates of others. Further, the role modeling of mindful hand hygiene within a clinical setting may have a cascading effect on others. 11 Teaching healthcare providers informal practices, such as mindful hand hygiene, could similarly bring mindfulness into clinical practice. A recent systematic review found that brief mindfulness interventions aimed at healthcare providers improve myriad clinical outcomes. The practice of mindfulness is described as paying attention in the present moment, in a purposeful and non-judgmental way.10 Mindfulness is meant to help move a person from a state where thoughts are unobserved and actions are on automatic pilot, to a state where situations are observed, acknowledged, and accepted. 8 Therefore, innovative strategies are needed to improve hand hygiene among healthcare providers. 2, 7 Although myriad strategies including education, feedback, and incentives have been implemented to encourage hand hygiene, most have had only transient or modest impact. ![]() ![]() ![]() 2– 4 Of note, hand hygiene adherence is known to be lower among physicians than nurses, 5– 7 and before patient encounters relative to after. 1 Unfortunately, healthcare provider adherence to hand hygiene practices are relatively low, even when education programs for hand hygiene are well-resourced and well-coordinated. One nice thing about this option is that it simply works as an X display out of the box. I found the latter option more convenient. Power can be taken from the GPIO, or the USB cable using a USB splitter. However, it connects directly to the DSI cable found on the PI 2 & 3. This is a much larger screen, intended for small tablet sized applications. Instead, I used the Pimoroni 7″ touchscreen display. Unfortunately I never found out, because I burnt the screen out when connecting up the required ribbon cables. In theory, it should work with the OpenSprinkler because they use different GPIO pins. The Adafruit screen is a nice little screen that is the ideal size for this project. The trick here appears to be the use of both sudo and the full path to the python executable. Where /home/pi/sprinkle/xmanual.py is the script that you would like to run. Add the following line: /usr/bin/python /home/pi/sprinkle/xmanual.py This is solved by editing ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart. The only slight oddity is that the touchscreen is technically showing a HDMI copy, and this will have the minimum coordinates of 640x480px – double the touchscreen’s actual resolution.Īnother issue which a lot of people appear to have had trouble with, is how to get the script to run at startup with X. Here is the pygame setup code: pygame.init() X will then interpret the touch events as mouse events which pygame can then interpret correctly. This took some figuring out, but the solution is to configure the display to use X, and then tell pygame to run in “full screen mode” with the mouse displayed. This displays well in framebuffer mode, but the touch does not work. I needed a simple graphical user interface, and a typical X desktop is far too small for a 2.8″ touchscreen, so I wrote a full screen menu system with pygame. This is a neat little screen that works as a ‘hat’ that plugs straight on to the Raspberry PI. I’ve chosen to use the Adafruit 2.8″ TFT Capacitive Touch LCD screen. This is for my own convenience, but I also don’t want to go through the hassle of telling a contractor how to log in to the local wifi and to go to an obscure URL to test a valve or station!
